Energy Efficient Coal Based Sponge Iron Technology

The Coal based Sponge Iron technology provided by VACON is highly energy efficient. In the conventional Sponge Iron Plant, the rotary Cooler is used for indirect cooling the Sponge Iron. Water is sprayed on the Cooler outer surface, for quenching the hot Sponge Iron inside the Cooler. The hot water is collected and sent to Cooling tower for reduction of water temperature, which is recycled again for cooling the Sponge Iron.

In this process, not only the heat energy available in the Sponge Iron is wasted, butalso a lot of Electrical Energy is used for rotation of Cooler, pumping & cooling of water.

VACON can provide innovative technology for Sponge Iron Cooling, where the hot Sponge Iron along with non-magnetics is discharged from the Kiln Out and fed to the “Stationary vertical Cooler” from top thru a DP Valve. The Nitrogen is blown into the refractory lined Vertical Coolerthrutuyeres, mounted on the belly region of the Cooler, at moderate pressure, which carries the heat of the Sponge Iron. The flue gas emanates from the Cooler, at elevated temperature. The flue gas is sucked by an Induced draft Fan at the top of the VerticalCooler and discharge duct of the Fan is connected to the elbow duct of Waste Gas Cleaning System for transfer of hot flue gas into the Waste Heat Recovery Boiler.

The flue Gas from the Vertical Cooler contains a lot of heat energy, which would help generation of additional  20% Steam in the Waste Heat Recovery Boiler.

The Sponge Iron along with the non-magnetics,  is discharged from the bottom of the Cooler thru an Air Lock Rotary Valve at a temperature less than 100 deg C.

The Cold Sponge Iron is first filled into the Vertical Cooler upto the top level. Once Hot Sponge Iron feeding starts, the constant level of filling is maintained by the discharge Air lock Rotary Valve having variable speed.  A provision of Grizzly and Emergency discharge Chute is provided above Rotary Valve for removal of boulders.
